2023 Japan Mobility Show: Honda Specialty Sports Concept points to fully electric S2000 successor

The previously debuted Honda Sports EV Concept (above) could provide clues about Honda Cars' soon-to-launch concept.

Honda Cars always has something interesting to show at the Japan Mobility Show (formerly called the Tokyo Motor Show).

But according to our friends from our sister publication WapCar, the Japanese carmaker is expected to debut an electrified sports car that carries on the spirit of the Honda S500, S600, S800 and S2000.

The only thing that is known so far about this exciting new model is that it will be called the “Honda Specialty Sports Concept.” Previous concept cars like the sleek Honda Sports EV Concept could provide clues on where the company is going with its latest sports car design.

Apart from the highly anticipated sports concept, the rest of the Honda Cars lineup at the show will comprise a few other new electric vehicles (EV).

One of these is an electric hatchback called Sustaina-C Concept, which carries styling cues from the Honda e and the old Honda Today.

Honda Cars said this concept is even more environmentally friendly than previous models as the body panels are made of acrylic resin that is recycled and reused.

Also making its world premiere at the show is the Honda Pocket Concept. It’s an extremely compact motorcycle that’s also constructed from acrylic resin and has an electric motor – consider it like a Honda Motocompacto that has been made even smaller.

There will also be a scooter-sized electric motorcycle called the Honda SC e: Concept. What sets it apart is that it is powered by two units of the Honda Mobile Power Pack e: swappable batteries.

Lastly, Honda will be introducing an electric last-mile mobility vehicle dubbed the CI-MEV.

The two-seater EV is primarily a “last-mile” solution, which pertains to the mode of transport used from public transportation hubs to homes. But Honda Cars said the CI-MEV can also provide mobility to people with physical impairments.

Honda Cars Philippines' electric dreams

Honda Cars Philippines Inc. (HCPI) returned to the electrification game with the launch of the all-new Honda CR-V on September 2023.

The top-spec CR-V RS e:HEV hybrid packs a 2.0-liter, twin-cam, 16-valve inline-4 gasoline engine mated to an electric motor. The combined output is 184 PS and 355 Nm of torque, coursed through a continuously variable transmission.

The e:HEV full-hybrid system also has an EV Drive Mode that lets the vehicle run solely on battery power.

However, HCPI president Rie Miyake said the carmaker is exploring not only bringing in more hybrid models, but also electric vehicles (EV).

HCPI aims to offer only electrified vehicles by 2040, which includes hybrids and EVs. This is also the same year that the Philippine government is targeting to mandate carmakers to sell exclusively brand-new EVs locally.

The most likely candidate, as of press time, is the Honda e:NS1 EV crossover, which was spotted at an EV charging station in Thailand on February 2023.
