Zero tailpipe emissions! BYD ATTO 3 EV gets 5-star Green NCAP rating

The 2023 BYD ATTO 3 scores a 5-star rating from the Green NCAP for its efficiency and low carbon emissions.

The BYD ATTO 3 electric vehicle (EV) has been given a 5-star rating by the Green New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP).

Unlike other NCAPs that focus on crash safety, the Green NCAP is an independent initiative promoting the development of clean and energy-efficient cars.

The BYD EV was assessed in various test categories, such as low consumption and efficiency in cold and warm laboratory tests, highway cycle and on-road tests.

In order to get a 5-star rating, the vehicle must get top scores in three main categories:

  • Clean Air Index
  • Energy Efficiency Index
  • Greenhouse Gas Index

Each category carries a weight of 10 points, with the maximum score achievable being 30 points. The BYD ATTO 3 scored 29.2 points out of a possible 30.

The BYD ATTO 3 scored perfectly, a whole 10 points, for its Clean Air tests, as the electric vehicle perfected its laboratory and road testing as it had no emissions to give.

Meanwhile, for the Energy Efficiency tests, the ATTO 3 still performed well under laboratory testing but did get some points taken away from the highway and cold ambient testing subcategories.

The EV used significantly more energy during highway testing, lowering its possible maximum range to 244 km.

Despite this, the ATTO 3 still performed well in cold-weather testing, thanks to its ability to use different sources of powertrain waste heat to keep the battery pack at a stable operating temperature. It was able to score a 9.5 out of 10 for this category.

Finally, the BYD ATTO 3 scored 9.7 out of 10 for its Greenhouse Gas tests. While it is an EV and produces no emissions from its tailpipe, the Green NCAP still deducted some points in this test due to emissions originating only from the electricity supply.

However, thanks to its efficient powertrain and heating concept, the EV still produces relatively low carbon dioxide emissions.

Even if BYD is a new player in the electric vehicle industry, it's proving itself to be a strong brand and a global leader thanks to its cars' efficiency and minimal environmental impact.
