Former Transportation undersecretary Alberto Suansing passed away on Sept. 23, 2022 at the age of 70.
His death was confirmed by his son, Alan, in a Facebook post on the same day.
Suansing, a licensed engineer, also served as the former chief of the Land Transportation Office (LTO) during the Arroyo administration, former chair of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, and a consultant of the Toll Regulatory Board and the Department of Transportation in the Duterte administration.
He was also renowned for his work in improving Philippine road safety as secretary-general of the Philippine Global Road Safety Partnership, often giving energetic seminars on the deadly consequences of disobeying traffic laws.
LTO deputy director for law enforcement Bob Valera told AutoFun Philippines that Suansing was humble, unassuming and full of wisdom when he served as LTO chief.
“He really knew his responsibilities as Assistant Secretary and guided the office towards being responsive to the needs of our clients,” Valera said in a text message. “Even when he became a consultant at the DOTr, I remember him calling me if he wanted to clarify issues involving LTO. He will sorely be missed.”
Lawyer Sophia San Luis, executive director of advocacy law firm ImagineLaw, called Suansing a reliable road safety voice who helped the group with their speed-limit advocacy.
“He did not just understand the social dynamic of road safety,” she told AutoFun Philippines in a text message. “He also understood and advocated for better understanding of the science behind road safety and its health dimension. Sad to hear of his passing.”
Meanwhile, Automobile Association of the Philippines trustee Robby Consunji told AutoFun Philippines that he has been looking forward to working with Suansing on a wide range of motoring issues.
In a Sept. 23, 2022 Facebook post, Consunji mourned Suansing’s passing and noted his numerous roles in government and in the private sector.
