The current generation Mazda2 has been on sale globally for almost a decade, with a recent done to the model for the Philippine market. The new update gives the solitary hatchback variant a new bumper along with other features that keep it looking fresh and sporty.

However, despite these updates, there is no denying that the current generation of the Mazda2 is getting old and is at the prime age for an all-new model to replace it. That said, Mazda Japan has already stated that it will no longer accept orders for specific variants of the Mazda2 as it winds down production for the model.

It's not the end of the road for the Mazda2 nameplate, as Japanese automotive media outlet Response recently released a scoop detailing that the fourth generation of the vehicle could be introduced in the third quarter of 2024.

Familiar Kodo styling

The new model will likely adopt the same design language as the Mazda CX-60, giving it a more aggressive look. However, keep in mind that no official information is available, so take the information with a grain of salt, as a lot can change between now and the full production model.

Aside from the new styling, the next-generation Mazda2 is expected to come with the brand’s Mazda Connect information system.

New power options under the hood?

PHOTO FROM WAPCAR

As for its power options, the all-new Mazda2 is expected to carry over its 1.5-liter gasoline and turbo diesel engines but will have two new motor options. The first is a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder Skyactiv X gasoline engine, while the other is an 830cc rotary engine similar to the one found in the MX-30 R-EV.

The rotary-powered model might be the plug-in hybrid version of the all-new Mazda2, with the gasoline motor only acting as a generator for the electric motor found in the vehicle. If the rumor is proven correct, it will function much like Nissan’s e-Power system, with the primary drive coming from the electric motor alone.

Will the Mazda2 PHEV and 1.5 3-cylinder be a good successor to the sporty hatchback, or will it tone down its nippy nature in favor of fuel economy?
