2023 JMS: Lexus LF-ZL concept debuts as EV replacement to LS flagship

You're looking at what could be the upcoming replacement to the legendary Lexus LS flagship sedan.

The Lexus LS was a game-changer when it was introduced in 1989, leaving European luxury carmakers in a cold sweat.

With its unmatched refinement, impeccable performance and superb value for money, the LS has long been the Japanese luxury marque’s flagship model, with the latest LS featuring advanced hybrid-electric vehicle technology.

But with Lexus’ aim to sell exclusively electric vehicles (EV) by 2035, the LS may not remain for long. Meet its replacement, the LF-ZL concept, which was launched on Oct. 25, 2023 at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show (JMS).

It uses a hatchback body that provides more utility and headroom than a traditional sedan like the Lexus LS. Much like the Lexus LF-ZC that also debuted at the JMS, this upcoming Lexus flagship uses sharp angles and creases, along with a wedge-shaped silhouette.

This is accomplished largely by having a low hoodline that features the brand’s signature boomerang-style LED headlights. The side profile is dictated by the huge diagonal character line that runs from the bottom of the door to the C-pillar.

Meanwhile, the defined wheel arches and the indentations give the LF-ZL a muscular appearance, which compliments the sloping rear windscreen. The rear end uses a somewhat Kammback style that sharply goes vertical.

Lexus said the LF-ZL measures 5,300 mm long, 2,020 mm wide and 1,700 tall, with a 3,350-mm wheelbase.

Like the LF-ZC, the LF-ZL has a spacious and serene cabin where the brand's traditional "Omotenashi" features are elevated through technology like the new Arene OS.

Through "Interactive Reality in Motion," the car's onboard sensors work in conjunction with digital data from the surroundings.

When drivers point to objects or places of interest during their journey, the car's display promptly delivers information along with voice guidance, enabling the car to enhance the connection between occupants and their surroundings.

Furthermore, Lexus said the utilization of big data allows management of the charging process and power supply, enabling the vehicle to seamlessly connect to the network and become an integral part of the societal infrastructure while parked.

Gigacasting

Although Lexus did not indicate the type of EV infrastructure that the LF-ZL uses, it is likely similar to the gigacast architecture used in the LF-ZC.

Gigacasting splits the vehicle body into three parts: front, center, and rear. Lexus said this construction method “provides greater freedom of form, while the integration of parts also increases rigidity, for linear and natural vehicle dynamics.”

Meanwhile, the LF-ZL batteries use a prismatic structure and are engineered to increase range through improved aerodynamic integration and weight reduction, enhancing vehicle efficiency and battery performance.

Aside from a low center of gravity for improved driving dynamics, the battery pack’s high energy density is achieved by simplifying and compacting the battery structure, allowing for the integration of more energy into the vehicle.
