Hyundai's new Creta makes a bold entrance into the Philippine subcompact crossover scene. With three variants, all fueled by a 1.5-liter petrol engine, it promises a driving experience that stands out. History

The Hyundai Creta, or Hyundai ix25 in China, is a dynamic subcompact crossover SUV crafted by Hyundai since 2014. Primarily aimed at emerging markets, particularly the BRIC nations, it showcases Hyundai's prowess in catering to diverse preferences.

The first model was launched in China in April 2014 as a near-production concept car, while the second-generation model debuted in 2019. This iteration also offers an extended version with three rows of seats. The new-generation Creta will be unveiled in the Philippines on June 20, 2022, alongside the launch of the fourth-generation Tucson, updated Santa Fe and Staria.

Variant and Price

The contemporary Creta stands out with a confident and distinctive design. While the new Creta's design is unique, it may not have the same poised and streamlined look as its predecessor.

The front end boasts split headlights flanked by an attractive cascading grille with an attractive geometric pattern. The Creta's split headlight unit sits under the edge of the bumper. Matches the silver accents in the middle and lower portion of the grille.

The side features multiple daytime running light units reminiscent of large Hyundai models. LED daytime running lights are seamlessly integrated into the headlights. The upgraded version is equipped with three-beam projector lamps and is equipped with turn signals near the fog lamps. The fenders display distinctive lines and accommodate 17-inch wheels. The side profile exudes a muscular silhouette, enhanced by pronounced creases along its character line and waistline. Silver highlights on the door handles and side skirts enrich the style and complement the Creta's two-tone floating roof. A two-tone color scheme may grace the upscale version. Additionally, depending on the trim level chosen, the model is also offered with a choice of silver or diamond-cut two-tone alloy wheels.

Turning to the rear, the angular aesthetic of the contemporary vehicle takes center stage, complete with black and silver accents. The lower part of the bumper features honeycomb detailing. Overall, this design shift is expected to resonate with Hyundai's younger and more mature customers, which is a favorable outcome.

Dimensions

Premium Cretas have automatic climate control, while base models come with manual controls. Standing out on the center console is the 8-inch infotainment touchscreen; however, lower trims feature a 2-DIN unit. The Creta is loaded with technology and utility enhancements, including smart entry, push-button ignition, a wireless charging pad, an adjustable tilt and telescoping steering wheel, and a solid 10.5-inch digital instrument cluster (lower models get analog dials).

Choose from a range of leather upholstery options, available in various color combinations. As before, the base models feature standard cloth upholstery, which is expected. Notably, the rear seats offer a convenient 60:40 fold-down configuration, enhancing both versatility and cargo capacity in this compact crossover.

Safety features

The initial layer of defense stems from the Creta's body structure, fortified with advanced ultra-high tensile steel to ensure exceptional crash resilience.

The Creta boasts a comprehensive safety suite, including six airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Vehicle Stability Management Control (VSM), Hill Start Assist Control (HAC), ISOfix child seat anchors, and disc brakes on all four wheels.

Space

The rear seats offer ample space, complete with a central armrest and adjustable head restraints. The Creta goes the extra mile with a convenient cup holder light. With its 60:40 folding configuration, the back bench creates extra room in the trunk—enough for two medium suitcases and smaller bags. Plus, the lower loading lip makes loading luggage onto the trunk easy.

Across all variants, the Hyundai Creta available in the Philippines is powered by a consistent engine—a SmartstreamG 1.5-liter DOHC equipped with dual CVVT technology. This powerhouse delivers a robust 115 horsepower and a peak torque of 144 Nm.

The vehicle has been carefully tuned to enhance its drivability and overall handling. The controls are responsive and the steering feels effortless. However, the lighter steering somewhat lacks the desired feedback. The hint of torque steer is palpable when the accelerator is fully pressed.

The Hyundai Creta promises a smooth, stable ride with impressive power. This time around, it offers a more substantial presence, though some refinement is still sought. The suspension has been fine-tuned to take on a softer setting, which results in a less bouncy ride than earlier iterations. Stability is improved at higher speeds, and the more forgiving suspension subtly absorbs minor road irregularities.

The Hyundai Creta's interior boasts generous ceiling heights and legroom that rivals the spaciousness of the Kia Seltos. People over 1.7m tall can enjoy a comfortable ride without any discomfort. While the seats are roomy, the option for a slight recline for the backrest would be a welcome addition.

The Hyundai Creta presents a compelling value proposition, offering a wealth of features that justify its slightly higher on-road cost. Its spacious interior, generous legroom, powerful engine, and efficient fuel economy make it stand out. With top-notch components, a potent engine, seamless transmission, impressive handling on both highways and city streets, robust safety features, and a range of excellent equipment, the Creta delivers a premium driving experience for both the driver and rear-seat passengers.

The Hyundai Creta's design could be a polarizing factor for potential buyers. The suspension leans towards the stiffer side, but it's more refined than the Kia Seltos. The rear seats might not comfortably accommodate three adults due to their width. Higher trims offer several additional features, such as a 360-degree camera, automatic wipers, illuminated window buttons, and a full-size spare wheel. Dual-clutch automatic transmissions can sometimes impact overall reliability. The diesel engine's performance figures may not fully satisfy, and unfortunately, the 1.4-litre turbo petrol variant doesn't come with a manual gearbox option.

In the same price range, you'll find larger SUVs like the Tata Harrier, MG Hector, and Mahindra XUV700. Despite this, the Hyundai Creta still offers exceptional value for its price.
