The 2021 Toyota Corolla Cross has just been launched 2 variants – 1.8G and 1.8V.
Equipped in the top-of-the-line Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8V series is the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 (TSS 2.0) Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS), which includes:
- Pre-collision System with Pedestrian Detection
- Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
- Lane Departure Alert
- Lane Tracing Assist
- Automatic High Beam
Pre-collision System is the face of Toyota's Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB). It uses cameras and millimeter wave radar to detect possible collisions and slow the car down to avoid or reduce them.
With Pedestrian Detection, the system identifies potential collisions with passers-by and bicyclists and automatically applies the brakes if the driver fails to brake within a set time.
Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is, you guessed it, Adaptive Cruise Control. Cameras and radar are also used to detect vehicles ahead and determine their distance. The system helps maintain a preset distance from the vehicle ahead.
Unlike the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control in the 2021 Toyota Corolla Cross which works at all speeds, the system in the Corolla Cross only works from 30 km/h to 180 km/h. So no stop-and-go function here unfortunately.
Lane Departure Alert as the name implies warns the driver when the vehicle is drifting out of its lane. This helps avoid the consequences of accidental lane changes. When Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is activated and lane markings are visible,Lane Tracing Assist will keep the vehicle in the center of the lane.
Automatic High Beam reduces glare from other drivers by automatically switching between high and low beams. It uses a camera to detect the headlights of oncoming traffic and the taillights of the vehicle in front of it.
In addition to Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, the Toyota Corolla crossover is equipped with Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA). Both use audible and visual warnings to alert the driver.
Its closest rival, the Honda HR-V, doesn't feature ADAS in any variants. The range-topping RS variant is equipped with Honda LaneWatch Camera, but we'd hesistate to consider it part of the ADAS umbrella.
The Toyota Corolla Cross is currently fully-imported (CBU) from Thailand. Locally-assembled (CKD) models are expected to arrive at the end of this year.
