How does the next-generation 2023 Ford Territory stack up in power against its rivals?

The 2023 Ford Territory is set to launch in the Philippines at the 2023 Manila International Auto Show this coming April.

In its latest iteration, the next-generation crossover brings brand-new looks, slightly larger dimensions and more power.

For context, the current version of the 1.5-liter, twin-cam, 16-valve, inline-4 EcoBoost gasoline engine in the Territory makes 143 PS and 225 Nm of torque.

The 2023 version of the motor now produces 160 PS and 248 Nm of torque. This represents a 17 PS and 23 Nm of torque increase. 

But the question is how it will the new Territory compare with its five-seater compact crossover rivals in the Philippines, such as the Mazda CX-5, the 5-seater version of the Honda CR-V, the Peugeot 3008, Kia Sportage and the Hyundai Tucson.

Mazda CX-5

The Philippine version of the Mazda CX-5 is available with three inline-4 gasoline engines, a 2.0-liter, a 2.5-liter and a 2.5-liter turbocharged motor.

Depending on the variant, the power output of the CX-5 ranges from 156 PS to 253 PS. The Mazda has a range of 200 to 434 Nm in terms of torque. 

Here's the thing: the 2023 Ford Territory dominates the entry-level Mazda CX-5 with the 2.0-liter engine. The Ford has 4 PS and 48 Nm of torque more than its Japanese rival.

However, once you enter the 2.5-liter engine range, the Territory is beaten out by the CX-5. The naturally aspirated 2.5-liter engine is more potent as it has 190 PS and 256 Nm of torque.

We must remember that the CX-5 is more expensive than the Territory and starts at ₱1,890,000, while the Ford SUV is expected to be around the ₱1.5 million range at most. 

Honda CR-V

The Honda CR-V in the Philippines is available with two different engines.

The first is a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated motor, while the second is a 1.6-liter turbocharged diesel engine.

The turbodiesel produces 120 PS and 300 Nm of torque, while the gasoline engine makes 154 PS and 189 Nm.

Even against its CR-V rival, the new Ford Territory already has the upper hand regarding horsepower. However, it is behind in torque, at least against the turbodiesel variants of the Japanese crossover. 

It is important to note that the CR-V starts at ₱1,763,000 for its gasoline-powered version, while its diesel variants start at ₱2,030,000.

With the 2023 Ford Territory rumored to be around ₱1.5 million, it is still the cheaper option to go if you want a more powerful crossover.

Peugeot 3008

Another crossover in the same segment as the upcoming 2023 Ford Territory is the Peugeot 3008.

Although this model is positioned in the premium segment, it still fights with Ford regarding size and power.

The 3008 is equipped with a 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engine for the Philippines market, producing 165 PS and 240 Nm of torque. While the new Ford Territory is down on power, it has more torque on tap compared to its French rival. 

Something to note is that the Peugeot 3008 is priced at ₱2,255,000, which is already way above the supposed pricepoint of the Territory. 

Kia Sportage

A much older rival of the upcoming Territory in the Philippines is the Kia Sportage.

This five-seater crossover used to come with two engine options. However, the South Korean automaker has slimmed down the variant lineup and has only left the GT-Line model.

It is powered by a 2.0-liter turbodiesel that produces 185 PS and 400 Nm of torque. Compared to the Territory, it makes more power and has an advantage of 25 PS and 152 Nm of torque.

It is important to note that the sole variant costs ₱1,820,000, which is more expensive than the reported price of the 2023 Territory.

Hyundai Tucson

Another new rival to the Ford Territory is the all-new Hyundai Tucson that was recently launched in the Philippines.

Like the Kia Sportage, it is also available with two engine options. The first is a 2.0-liter gasoline engine that produces 156 PS and 192 Nm of torque, while the other is a 2.0-liter turbodiesel that makes 186 PS and 416 Nm of torque.

While the Territory has an advantage over the gasoline version of the Tucson, it lags behind in terms of power to the diesel variant.

The Hyundai Tucson is priced at ₱1,570,000, which puts it within striking distance of the 2023 Ford Territory and its reported price.

This means that the two crossovers could end up going to head-to-head with one another once the Ford crossover makes its debut. 

Why no Coolray?

The Geely Coolray is positioned as a subcompact crossover in the Philippine market.

It means the 2023 Ford Territory won’t directly fight against its Geely counterpart.

However, as many buyers see them as rivals, we will put in their comparison for good measure. The Coolray produces 177 PS and 255 Nm of torque from its 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine.

The Territory, on the other hand, has 160 PS and 248 Nm of torque. 

The figures show that the Coolray is still the more powerful of the two crossovers. It has a 17 PS and 7 Nm of torque advantage over its rival.
