Annyeonghaseyo, KG Mobility - the South Korean car brand formerly known as SsangYong 01

SsangYong Motor has a new name, which is easy to pronounce and remember. And hopefully, it won't be mistaken as a Chinese brand ever again.

The South Korean car company has announced that it will now be called KG Mobility as it takes on the name of its new owners.

Company chairman Kwak Jea-sun initially announced that the company would adopt the new name of KG SsangYong Mobility last January 2023. This was recently confirmed in a shareholder’s meeting this March 22nd.

However, the name SsangYong has been wholly dropped even though its latest car models have revived the ‘twin-ring’ logo of the 1990s.

The former SsangYong Torres has been recently released as an electric vehicle - the Torres EVX. It is now devoid of SsangYong badging up front, with only the rehashed logo at the rear remaining.

The Torres has been a Top 10 seller in South Korea since its launch last year amidst the company’s lingering financial turmoil, which led to its bankruptcy and rehabilitation.

The KG Group, a conglomerate with businesses ranging from fertilizers to steelworks and fast food, now owns a 61.86% majority stake in the company with the shares it bought from former SsangYong owners Mahindra.

The sale allowed SsangYong to pay off its 299.4 billion won debt last November 2022.

SsangYong's local distributor, SsangYong Berjaya Motor Philippines, has yet to release a statement about its business status with the brand. It does continue to sell its remaining inventory of SsangYong vehicles as well as perform after-sales commitments to existing customers.
