There has been a shift in the automotive market in the Philippines, where electrification and hybrid vehicles are becoming mainstream and more popular with the average car buyer.
Filipinos are now beginning to understand that electric vehicles could be the future of mobility and that significant savings can be had if they transition to an EV.
Enter the BAW Pony and the Wuling Mini EV Macaron. No, you aren’t seeing double, as both of these vehicles are mini EVs seeking to enter the local market and target younger first-time car buyers with their attractive proposals for electrified mobility.
We will compare the two to see which option will be better.

Are they clones?
Not quite, but they do share a similar body design. The two have slight differences, such as a different set of headlights and front bumper design, but that's about it.
The BAW Pony has a sleeker-looking grille design that emphasizes the fact that it's an EV. It shares the same layout for the headlights as the Wuling, but the LED daytime running light has a different split. The Pony has a horizontal split instead of a vertical split in the Mini EV Macaron.
The wheel covers differ between the two mini EVs, but the wheel size remains 12 inches. Something to note is that sourcing 12-inch tires in the Philippines can be difficult as few suppliers offer that size.
We must note that the BAW has two variants available, one with a 120 km range and another with a 170 km range. The Wuling Macaron is the sole variant with less than 300 kilometers of range in the Wuling lineup.
So far, it's a tie between the two, as it all boils down to your preferences regarding styling.
Similar colorful interiors and convenience
A quick look at these two vehicles' cabins reveals similar layouts. They both take on horizontal dashboards that are color-keyed with the car's exterior color.
If you are worried about the summer heat of the Philippines, you will be happy to know that both models have decent air conditioning systems that keep you cool. However, do not expect an automatic function as both vehicles only have manual controls available.
Aside from this, they also come with a similar feature set, such as a digital gauge cluster and Bluetooth connectivity.
However, the BAW has an advantage as it comes with a digital media display in either seven or 10 inches, depending on the chosen variant. It is a feature that isn’t available in the Wuling.
Another advantage the BAW EV has is that its Pony L it comes with a 360-degree panoramic camera and rear radar to help you when you need to park the already tiny EV.
The same electrified power
These tiny EVs are powered by a 20 kW permanent magnet synchronous motor. It produces 27 PS and 85 Nm of torque. Power is sent exclusively to the rear wheels.
As for their batteries, both pack a 13.7 kWh battery pack, which is good for about 170 kilometers worth of range. Something to note is that the BAW Pony S has a smaller 9.6 kWh battery pack that lowers its maximum range to just 120 kilometers.
Both vehicles also use AC charging which can be achieved with a standard 220V. Unfortunately, they do not have support for Type 2 chargers which are often found in malls.
What about warranties and pricing?
BAW Philippines has yet to disclose the Pony S and Pony L warranties. However, we can tell you that the Wuling Mini EV Macaron has a 3-year or 100,000 km vehicle warranty and a 5-year or 120,000-km battery warranty.
We also have to note that Wuling Philippines is setting up its dealership network, with its flagship dealership ready to open sometime in July.
The pricing for the BAW Pony is as follows:
BAW Pony S -₱598,000 - 120 km range
BAW Pony L -₱ 678,000 - 170 km range
The Wuling Mini EV Macaron can be had for ₱663,000 for its 170 km range model. ₱593,000 now until July 31st with Wuling Philippines' introductory promo. The more affordable pricing of the Wuling at the moment makes it a more attractive purchase if you are after the extra range.
However, if you are okay with just 120 km worth of range, and if you want the functionality of a touchscreen, then the BAW Pony S is the more attractive offer.
Which would you choose, the Wuling Mini EV Macaron or the BAW Pony?
