The current-generation Mazda MX-5 is getting to the prime age for a replacement or a refresh as it approaches its eighth year of sale.

However, Mazda still wants to keep the sports car around slightly longer as it prepares for an all-new model to arrive. 

Photos on the internet have already spied a test mule that hast the front of the vehicle hidden with camouflage. It hints that the Japanese automaker may have a facelift planned for the car to extend its model life.

Mazda has yet to reveal the details about the vehicle and what other new features it might add to the MX-5. 

Rumors speculate that a new engine could be in the works, but this has yet to be confirmed.

Images from the Instagram account Rollende Reporter have spotted what appears to be a test mule out on the track at the Nurburgring. 

The post states that the vehicle spotted might be the facelifted MX-5, as it now comes with subtle tweaks to its headlights, tail-lights, and fog-light patterns. 

Aside from this, the facelifted model also has a new antenna and what appears to be a new bumper design for the front of the vehicle.

The rear of the vehicle also gets a new, slightly revised bumper with a more arched look at its lower half.  However, the rest of the vehicle still looks the same as the current model. 

What about the new model?

Nothing is set in stone yet, as there are rumors regarding the next-generation MX-5. However, reports from Japan have speculated that the new may be known as the NE or the NG and is set to arrive sometime in 2025 with some form of electrification.
