Toyota RAV4

The current 5th generation Toyota RAV4 adopts Toyota’s New Global Architecture, which focuses on improving the vehicle’s agility, stability, and visibility. For 2022, Toyota has updated its popular 5-seater, compact crossover by transforming it into a hybrid. The updated RAV4 uses Toyota’s new energized hybrid system, offering a balance between fuel efficiency and driving pleasure. The Toyota RAV4 HEV is powered by a 2.5-liter Dual VVT-I inline-4 gasoline engine working with an electric motor generator. Combined, Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain can generate 215 hp and 221 Nm of torque. Power is then sent to the front wheels through a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

History and Launch

Considered as the first compact crossover, the RAV4  has come a long way since it made its debut in Japan and Europe in 1994. The succeeding generations of the RAV4 have evolved to embody all the features of what a compact crossover should have. What’s more, It has the utility of an SUV but with the maneuverability and fuel economy that of a sedan. The RAV4 is one of Toyota’s most popular model, as it even became the best-selling SUV of any type in the world, and the fourth best-selling passenger car overall.

As for the fifth and current generation Toyota RAV4, this was initially unveiled during the 2018 New York International Auto Show. The latest front-wheel drive platform of the Toyota RAV4 is based on Toyota’s New Global Architecture. A feature which it also shares with other cars in Toyota’s line up such as the eighth-generation Camry, fifth-generation Avalon, and seventh-generation Lexus ES. In 2022, Toyota Motors Philippines gave the RAV4 a fresh update by transforming it into a gasoline-electric hybrid (Hybrid Synergy Drive).

The Toyota RAV4 price in the Philippines starts at P2,157,000.00. The lowest price is the Toyota RAV4 2.5 XLE HEV CVT, ranging all the way up to the Toyota RAV4 2.5 LTD HEV CVT (White Pearl Crystal Shine) priced at P2,515,000.00.

The current generation Toyota RAV4 still looks fresh from its 2019 redesign that featured new proportions and angular looks.

The large grille opening which embodies Toyota’s signature design continues to dominate the front fascia.  It also comes with sleek LED projector headlamps feature daytime running lamps (DRL) and automatic high beam function. As for the erst of the exterior, the black trims on the square shaped fender arches and the rocker panels signify its rugged nature. Both variants also feature LED rear combination taillamps and a huge panoramic moonroof.

The Toyota RAV4 is available in the following colors, Urban Khaki, Attitude Black Mica, White Pearl Crystal Shine, Silver Metallic, Grayish Blue, Red Mica, Great Metallic and Super White II.

Dimensions

The Toyota RAV4 measures 4,600 mm in length, 1855 mm in width, 1685 mm in height, 2690 mm in wheelbase and an empty weight of only 1558 kg. With these dimensions, this car looks impressive even as an SUV that can be used for Off Road purposes.

Combined, Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain can produce up to 218 PS and 221 Nm of torque. Power is then sent to its front wheels through a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Engine

The Toyota Rav4 has a DOHC 16 valve engine with inline 4 cylinders with a capacity of 2.5 liters that can spit out a maximum power of up to 176 HP at 6,000 RPM engine speed and a maximum torque of 233 Nm at 4,100 RPM engine speed. With this power, the Toyota Rav4 feels very tough for urban streets with a Stop and Go character and for Off Road needs on steep roads because it has relatively large torque.

Transmissions

The Toyota Rav4's power is channeled through a 6-speed automatic transmission to be forwarded to drive the front wheels.

Platform and Chassis

The fifth generation Toyota RAV4 adopts the New Global Architecture Platform of Toyota. Its main goal is to simplify vehicle production by allowing their cars to share a common platform. More specifically, the RAV4 has a TNGA-K platform that it shares with other mid-size/full-size car, and compact/mid-size crossover SUV Toyota cars. Compared to Toyota's older platforms, TNGA costs 20 percent less to produce while offering increased chassis stiffness, lower centers of gravity for better handling and lower hood cowls for better forward visibility.

Riding & Control

This SUV uses MacPherson strut front suspension with Stabilizer at the front and Double wishbone rear suspension with Stabilizer at the rear, making the Toyota Rav4 handling performance more reliable and comfortable for uneven roads. In addition, to support stability, Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRAC) are also presented to control traction or the right grip on certain terrain. As for the braking system, it uses a Ventilated Front Disc type on the front and a Solid Rear Disc Brake on the back which will provide optimal braking. 

The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is just what the compact crossover segment needs, giving car buyers the chance to take advantage of Toyota’s hybrid technology.
