Simply put, a scrambler is a standard street bike fitted with knobby tires so it can traverse both asphalt and dirt without issues. It is minimalistic, and whatever a scrambler lacks in features, it makes up with character and appeal. The idea is to enable you to ride like a hooligan regardless of the terrain.

The Scram 411 is Royal Enfield’s modern take on the iconic scrambler offering young riders a glimpse of how motorcycle riding was done in the old days. However, they did some tweaking to make it more suitable to the highly urbanized lifestyle of motorcyclists today. Here are some of the Scram 411’s features we’ve noted after having some saddle time.

Easy-going mill

Make no mistake; this doesn’t mean the engine is sluggish. It’s quite the opposite. The 411cc big single offers 32 Nm at 2500 rpm. You get maximum grunt at low revs, so you don’t have to stress the bike (and yourself) to enjoy quick jaunts between stoplights. This also makes riding in stop-and-go situations less of a chore, as there is no need to shift gears often. The Scram 411 will happily chug along in third gear all day.

Comfy ergonomics

The Scram 411 allows a neutral riding position where the back of the rider is straight with the grips slightly raised. The foot pegs are placed directly under the saddle, and there’s plenty of legroom even for taller riders. On the other hand, shorter riders need not worry as the relatively low 795 mm seat height will still allow you to straddle the bike with both feet touching the ground.

Nimble handling

Tipping the scale at 185 kilograms, the Scram 411 is light for a motorcycle of its displacement. Royal Enfield shed some weight by opting for plastic panels and fenders for the Scram 411, as opposed to the usual steel material that the brand favors. Aside from the LS-410 engine platform, the Scram 411 also shares its Harris Performance chassis with the Himalayan. It sports a smaller 19-inch front and 17-inch rear tire configuration. This makes the Scram more flickable when navigating through congested city streets.

Tollway legal

Why would you need your city bike to be tollway legal? Well, there are tollways within the city now: C5 Link, NAIAX and Skyway. This will enable you to get from one end of the metropolis to the other without going through the chaos. It is also nice to have the option of taking the tollways when on the occasional out-of-town excursion.

Fuel-efficient

For an entry-level “big bike,” the Scram 411 consumes fuel like a commuter. I managed 32 kilometers per liter, riding exclusively in urban traffic. More than anything, fuel efficiency is what makes a good daily rider.

At ₱313,000, the Scram 411 could also be a reasonably-priced starter bike for novice riders who want to get into the leisure riding lifestyle. It is thrifty, easy to use, and has that authentic scrambler character if that is what you are going for. You wouldn’t be embarrassed riding one of these to a meet-up with your buddies.

Royal Enfield Philippines conducts test ride activities for their bikes almost every weekend. Why not go and test the Scram 411 yourself? Get in touch with them through their FB page to know their schedule.
