History
Toyota Motor Philippines launched the first gen Vios in 2003 with 4 variants - the 1.3 Base, 1.3 J, 1.3 E and 1.5 G - replacing the 1.3L variant of Corolla. In 2013, the Vios gen 3 (XP150) was introduced. In 2018, the facelift model of the Vios - based on its sibling, the Yaris ATIV - replaced the Vios gen 3 in the Philippines.
The latest model of the Vios (2020 - 2021) is also based on the same platform as Yaris ATIV, offered with a 1.5 L 2NR-FE engine or a 1.3 L 1NR-FE engine, and the 1.5 L variant was coded NSP151.
Exterior
With the platform carried over, the latest Vios’s exterior shares the same design language with the Yaris and the Corolla Altis. It receives a revised front bumper with a split upper grille, a large lower grille fascia and vertical fog lamp housings. While the side and rear remained largely the same with its predecessor.
Interior
The interior of the Toyota Vios 2020 looks more mature, and more similar to its bigger brother Corolla Altis. The G variant now gets leather wrappings and a 7-inch touch screen, adding some luxurious feeling to the car.
The space on the second row remains basically the same, but the newly designed seats and bottle holders do improve comfort, to a certain extent.
Safety Features
All 9 variants (Base, J, XE, E, and G) of the Toyota Vios 2020 come with 7 SRS airbags, including a knee airbag and side curtains. ABS with EBD is also standard, while ESC, ISOFIX anchors on rear seats, and Hill-Start Assist Control are optional. These safety equipment have earned an ASEAN NCAP five-star rating for the car.
In the Philippines, lower-priced versions of the Base, J, and XE variants with only 3 airbags are offered, too.
Power Specs
Here are some basic power specs of the Toyota Vios 2020:
Engine Type |
1.3L In-Line 4-Cylinder 16-Valve DOHC Dual VVT-I Gasoline (1NR-FE) |
1.5L In-Line 4-Cylinder 16-Valve DOHC Dual VVT-I Gasoline (2NR-FE) |
Maximum Power |
98 hp @6,000 rpm |
106 hp @6,000 rpm |
Maximum Torque |
123 Nm @4,200 rpm |
140 Nm @4,200 rpm |
Both engines can be mated to a 5-speed manual transmission or an automatic (CVT) transmission.
Driving Performance and Handling
The Base, J, and XE variants are equipped with 14-inch steel wheels and 175/65 R14 tires, while the XLE and E variants can get 15-inch alloy, and the top variant, the G, gets 16-inch wheels. The rear brakes of the G variant are also disc brakes, but for lower trim levels, disc brakes are only available at the front.
Power steering comes standard with a nicely weighted steering wheel, which can bring stable and smooth highway rides to the driver. But don’t expect too much on performance, since it only produces about one hundred horsepower, and it is not designed for intense driving.
Fuel Consumption
The fuel consumption of the Toyota Vios 2020 equipped with 1.3 L engine returned 22 km/L when tested on the highway, and 10 km/L in heavy traffic.
The 1.5 L variants are slightly less fuel-efficient than those 1.3 L variants, but still outstanding. When tested on the highway, the car returned 19.2 km/L, and 8.1 km/L when crawling through the city.
