The R35 Nissan GT-R has been around since I was in first-year high school.
Despite having its “Sweet 16” on December 2023, the latest iteration of this iconic Japanese supercar still has what it takes to stick it to the likes of what Europe has to offer.
Indeed, the R35’s long-time rival has been the Porsche 911 Turbo, which has been revamped over three generations (997, 991 and the current 992).
But the latest scoop from Japanese car magazine BestCarWeb may see a completely new rival for the next-generation R36 GT-R.
That’s because the upcoming model may be a four-door electric vehicle (EV) pumping out around 800 PS. This puts the vehicle in the firing line of the Porsche Taycan Turbo S and the upcoming 2025 Lotus Emeya R.
If true, this wouldn’t be the first sedan with a GT-R badge.
The Hakosuka GT-R from the 1970s and the R33 GT-R from the 1990s were both available with rear doors. But BestCarWeb’s rendering of this GT-R EV features a coupe-like silhouette with a long hood and a short, hatchback rear end.
Up front, thin LED headlights give the car an aggressive look, while the prominent lower front grills will likely be for cooling the brakes and directing airflow for better performance.
Down the side, a high beltline follows the GT-R styling tradition, while the intakes in the side skirts point to additional brake cooling.
Out back, the iconic four, round taillights stand out, with a subtle rear wing and diffuser keeping its performance potential relatively quiet.
The possibility of an EV R36 GT-R isn’t too far-fetched, especially with the debut of the Nissan Hyper Force concept at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show.
Sporting insane styling and a 1,360-PS powertrain, the hyper EV points to where Nissan plans to take its flagship performance vehicles. The four, round taillights out back are also a telling clue.
The Hyper Force is part of a five-car formation that makes up Nissan’s Hyper EV lineup, which includes a bevy of crossovers and a large van.
Do you think Nissan should jump straight to EV technology with the next GT-R?
