A lot of you went crazy when we first reported on the uncamouflaged five-door version of the popular Suzuki Jimny sport-utility vehicle (SUV).
Well, you better brace yourselves for this one – the Jimny five-door is coming to the Philippines as early as June 2023.
This is according to a source with intimate knowledge of the matter, but spoke to AutoFun Philippines under the condition of strict anonymity for lack of authority to speak about it.
The five-door Jimny officially debuted at the 2023 Auto Expo in India on January 2023. The SUV is manufactured at the Maruti Suzuki plant in Gurugram, with sales expected to start in June this year.
Big stretch
For the most part, the five-door Jimny is just a larger three-door variant, down to the tailgate-mounted spare wheel.
In terms of dimensions, it now measures 3,985 mm in length, with its wheelbase stretched to 2,590 mm. This represents a 335 mm lengthening of the body and a 340 mm wheelbase stretch.
As this is an off-road-centric SUV, it must be able to tackle the outdoors. It has a 36-degree approach, a 24-degree break over and a 50-degree departure angle.
Its ground clearance is the same as the three-door version at 210 mm.
Better economy and safety
In other markets, the Jimny five-door gets a stop-start system that turns off the engine when idling for long periods.
It has yet to be determined if it will also get the mild-hybrid system used in other Suzukis.
The bigger Jimny also has the same 1.5-liter, twin-cam, 16-valve inline-4 gasoline engine as the three-door model. It pumps out 105 PS and 134 Nm of torque, coursed through either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic gearbox.
It likewise receives upgrades in the safety department with six airbags as standard instead of two in the three-door.
