Sepc Check: PH Toyota Hilux GR Sport vs European Counterpart

When it comes to certain specifications and features; no two Toyota Hilux are built exactly alike (much like the veritable snowflake) which can be proven when you zero in among the smallest of details largely exhibited by a Philippine-spec 2022 Toyota Hilux GR Sport 2.8 DSL 4x4 AT and a 2022 Toyota er, Hilux, one that was largely built to accommodate European specifications.

Moreover, when spot-checked from a certain angle, both these two aforementioned Hiluxs rather appear like two peas in a pod—sans the snorkel (which can be found on Hilux Rugged X), of course.

In addition, both cars display the same rugged stance and fierce demeanor of true compact workhorses however, these two pick-up trucks in question still slightly differs ( no matter how much of the famed resemblance) from one another in terms of chassis configurations as well as other accouterments as we shall see in this article.

Local Hilux Has a Bigger Set of Wheels But the Euro-Version Brags of Good-Quality Tires

To start, let's begin with the exterior. In essence, the PHL-spec Hilux GR Sport manifests somewhat patina-flared bulging wheel arches while its European cousin sports a matte-black finish overfenders for a more rugged appeal.

Meanwhile, the local Hilux rolls around with bigger treads, good 18-inch black alloy mugs while the Euro-GR Sport stomps around minuscule 17-inch tires although, these are spit-fired also to a matte-black perfection but dressed with all-terrain tires, which is the bigger deal, as compared to the local version that comes capped with only the standard rubbers.

Different Front Fascia and Bumper Detailing are Evident Between the Two Cars But Both Has the Same Cabin Features

Observers are somehow quick to judge that Hilux GR Sport models, whether here or in Europe have that same basic element of exterior design but we do beg to differ as a sneak peek gravely reveals that the Euro-spec GR Sport has that angular-looking snarl to its front grille while bolstering a unique front apron and of course its endearing fog light bezels.

However, the former lacks a sports bar at the back, much to the dismay of worldwide Hilux fans while the local Hilux gets to flaunt it, as it has this indispensable feature.

But moreover, when it comes to the interior amenities, the GR Sport models sold in Europe and the Philippines offer the same features, such as supple leather GR Sports seats, a steering wheel covered in faux carbon fiber trim inserts, aluminum sport pedals, steering wheel paddle shifters, a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, automatic climate control, red contrast stitching, and imitation carbon fiber floor mats.

But still, though, the European Hilux has the discriminating edge over the PH-Hilux because the former has that cooly blue-hued ambient lighting plastered on the door panel while a commanding red trim piece runs the entire gamut of the dashboard for a more visual appeal.

Both Ph and Euro-Hilux's Sports the Same Engine But Highly Differs in Differential Set-Ups

A quick peek under the hood reveals a 1GD-FTV 2.8-liter turbo-diesel plant that generates 204 PS along with 500 Nm of torque lashed to a six-speed automatic gearstick.

However, the Euro-Hilux gets to drift along a limited-slip differential while the PHP Hilux glides on an auto-disconnecting differential on the 4WD trims.

Moreover, an upgraded suspension now boasts monotube shock absorbers. The monotube units used on the Hilux GR Sport, according to Toyota, offer superior damping performance, enabling quicker response and greater heat dissipation. Toyota claims that by harnessing the dampers with new front coil springs, calibrated rear leaf springs, and new bushings, steering responsiveness was markedly improved.

What's more, brewing under the mist of wildly-excitable speculation/rumor is a yet unconfirmed report of a highly-anticipated arrival of a diesel V6-powered Toyota Hilux that according to Drive.com.au, would eventually have a fearsome face-off with Ford's new 3.0-litre turbo-diesel, V6 Ranger, sometime soon, say, er, probably by 2025?

We just can't seem to wait and hold our breath for this classic stand-off between two formidable road warriors and what's that you say Georgy boy, does this new play thingy (Hilux 2025) comes with an auto-dimming rear view mirror?

Well, I bet it surely does hah-hah.
