It seemed only yesterday when Geely Philippines launched the Azkarra compact crossover. And back in 2020, it was a groundbreaking offering with its 48V mild-hybrid system and plush and feature-packed interiors. Despite its renowned refinement, fuel efficiency, and tech, the first-generation Azkarra that we have today is already six years old. And that is already ancient in car speak.
That is why the time is right for Geely to introduce the 2023 Boyue L. This 5-seat crossover is the basis of what, for us, will be the next-generation Azkarra. As to whether it will arrive in 2023 is still up in the air.
At first sight, the 2023 Geely Boyue L looks significantly different from the outgoing model.
The Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform jointly developed by Geely and Volvo forms the 2023 Boyue L's structural foundation. The same platform underpins the Volvo XC40, Polestar 2, and a few Lynk & Co models.
The second-generation Boyue L/ Azkarra is larger than its predecessor in all key dimensions.
Model Year | Length | Width | Height |
2020 Azkarra | 4,519 mm | 1,831 mm | 1,694 mm |
2023 Boyue L / Azkarra | 4,670 mm | 1,900 mm | 1,705 mm |
Featuring a sharper and more futuristic exterior styling, the 2023 Boyue L employs LED technology to create a visual accent that covers the width of the front end. The main body line extends from the front doors to the D-pillar while the window line sharply tapers upwards to the back, where an LED strip joins two boomerang-like taillight fixtures. And combined with the LED lighting elements integrated into the grille and more pronounced wheel arch cladding, the 2023 Boyue L appears larger and more dynamic than the outgoing model.
Inside, a 13.2-inch vertical touchscreen display is the centerpiece of the more premium interiors of the 2023 Boyue L. The infotainment system runs on a Snapdragon 8155 automotive chipset making it more seamless and feature-rich.
A new dashboard design featuring vertical line accents makes the interiors all the more attractive to the eye. The second generation continues with the two-tone finish inside the cabin with more detailed and intricate design elements that make it more upscale than the outgoing model.
Level 2 autonomous driving is likewise included in the mix of driving assist features for the Boyue L. A choice between 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter turbo gasoline engines with a 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission is available. Electrified versions with either a hybrid or plug-in hybrid powertrain partnered with a 1.5-liter engine are also in the Chinese lineup.
Do you think the 2023 Geely Boyue L will make for a promising Azkarra replacement with all these design and technical features?
