2023 Toyota Agya/Wigo launched: Gets 1.2-liter Raize engine

PT Toyota Astra Motor (Toyota Indonesia) has revealed the all-new Toyota Agya and Toyota Agya Sport. This is the same model sold as the Toyota Wigo in the Philippines. The most notable improvement lies under the hood as the Agya now sports a 1.2-liter 3-cylinder Dual VVT-i WA-VE engine that produces 88 PS and 113 Nm of torque. The same mill used in the Toyota Raize. Power is sent to the wheels via a Continuously Variable Transmission.

Now measuring 3,760 mm long, 1,655 mm wide, 1,505 mm tall, and with a wheelbase of 2,525 mm, the all-new Agya also gets more cargo space with its larger 610 mm trunk.

Aside from the new streamlined bumper, notable changes on the front end include thinner headlight housings with plasma LED DRLs on top.

The all-new platform shared with the Perodua Axia is more spacious and more considerate of the driver's and passengers' sitting position.

Key dynamic improvements include a suspension system that Toyota says can absorb shocks better. It also says that vehicle handling is also "more agile, stable, and has fewer body roll opportunities."

The all-new Toyota Agya is based on the new  Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) platform as used in the Toyota Raize, Toyota Avanza-Veloz, and Toyota Vios. This gives the Agya increased lateral stiffness for a more stable rear end. The torsion beam has also been made stiffer for easier car control, according to Toyota.

The Agya G will still have 14-inch wheels with 175/65 tires while the GR Sport will wear 15-inch alloys wrapped with 185/55 rubber.

The Toyota Agya's Electronic Power Steering has been made more responsive with a smaller turning radius as the car has been designed under the brand's "Exciting City Car" concept.

What's new inside?

Inside, the horizontal design concept gives a more sophisticated and driver-oriented impression to show a sporty, high-quality interior.

The instrument panel and door trim adopt a 3D texture to give it a sophisticated feel.

The center console and transmission lever are moved higher to maintain better driver ergonomics because of the design settings and seat position that can support the body optimally, including changes to the design and layout of the pedals.

Most features, including the digital air conditioning controls, power mode drive, even the traditional dial speedometer remain intact presumably in the lower variant.

All-new Agya GR Sport

Together with the base Agya, Toyota also released the sportier Agya GR Sport. Featuring an exterior aero kit that improves on the previous generation's aerodynamics by adding downforce. Tire grip has also been improved with airflow diverted to reduce pressure on the rear tires.

A two-tone paint scheme with blacked-out upper portions of the car also makes the Agya GR Sport easily distinguishable on the road. Rain visors have also been included on the display model during the launch.

Other key changes to the Agya GR Sport include:

  • Exclusive shock absorbers and coil springs are formulated to provide maximum dampening power
  • EPS also gets a tighter gear ratio to make it more agile when maneuvering
  • Specially selected sports tires to increase the tire's traction on straight roads and maintain a grip on winding roads

The safety question mark

Unlike its twin, the Perodua Axia, the Toyota Agya will not get the equivalent advanced driver assist features under its Toyota Safety Sense package.

"At the Toyota Agya, there is no TSS feature yet. Because we look at the segment and want to present Agya at affordable prices for all variants," said Henry Tanoto, Vice President of PT Toyota Astra Motor (TAM) when asked by our Autofun Indonesia colleagues.

The all-new Toyota Agya is being marketed as a customer's first car of choice. Designed with aggressive exterior styling that creates an emotional connection with its owner.

It remains to be seen as to which features and specifications Toyota Motor Philippines will bring in as it prepares to update its A-segment hatchback.
