5-star safety rating: Geely Okavango / Proton X90 gets top marks with the ASEAN NCAP crash testing

The Geely Okavango also called the Proton X90 in other markets, has just undergone crash testing with the ASEAN New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) and has passed with flying colors.

The vehicle was tested at the China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CATARC) lab in China but under the testing rules and regulations of the ASEAN NCAP under its 2021 to 2025 assessment protocols.

These new protocols emphasize the vehicle’s Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS), including autonomous emergency braking and motorcyclist safety tests.

Understanding the ASEAN NCAP

The ASEAN NCAP tests a car with four main categories: Adult Occupant Protection (40%), Child Occupant Protection (20%), Safety Assist (20%), and Motorcyclist Protection (20%), totaling 100 percent.

These four main categories have their sub-categories which are comprised of individual tests which come with corresponding points.

It's confusing, but to simplify things, we will focus on the weight scores; these are the scores per major category that come out when all the computations are finished with the subcategories and their tests.

The Geely Okavango/ Proton X90 was able to get the following for its weighted scores per category:

  • Adult Occupant Protection - 37.75/40
  • Child Occupant Protection - 17.79/20
  • Safety Assist - 15.71/20
  • Motorcycle Protection - 12.50/20

These scores give Geely Okavango a final score of 83.75/100.

It also means that the Geely Okavango/ Proton X90 exceeded the minimum score of 80 to get a 5-star safety rating.

Safety highlights

The Geely Okavango did exceptionally well in the Adult Occupant Protection category, rated as “good” for the individual tests for the major category.

For the Child Occupant Protection category, the standard six airbags found in the vehicle help boost its score with individual testing done.

As for the Safety Assist category, the Okavango/ X90 performed well with its autonomous emergency braking, which gave it a satisfactory score due to its ability to detect pedestrians. Its blind spot detection also helped the vehicle increase its score for this category with satisfactory ratings.

Hold your horses

Something to note is that the Philippine version of the Proton X90/ Geely Okavango does not come with emergency braking as standard. It means that for the localized specs of the vehicle, a lower score is possible due to the absence of the feature.

As the updated Geely Okavango now comes with a 5-star ASEAN NCAP rating, will you consider getting it as your next car when it arrives in the Philippines?
