Mazda Motor Corp. has announced that it will launch its first electric vehicle-only model in 2027. The Japanese automaker’s CEO, Masahiro Moro, stated in a recent interview in Tokyo that the new model is part of the brand’s effort to speed up its electrification efforts to keep it competitive globally.

Mazda has already dabbled with electric vehicles (EVs) with the Mazda MX-30 crossover, launched as a hybrid vehicle with electric-only and rotary range-extender models also available. It also sells a converted EV version of its CX-30 crossover. However, the Japanese automaker has no dedicated electric vehicle platform yet.

According to Kyodonews, Moro-san has also stated that Mazda will ramp up production of EV-only models from 2028 onwards. It will also accelerate its development of new technologies and parts and work with Toyota Motor Corp. for electric control equipment.

He vowed to step up its electrification efforts in China, the largest auto market in the world, betting that a shift to EVs in the country will proceed at a rapid pace.

"We will offer one (EV) model after another from 2025" through a Chinese joint venture, Moro-san said in an interview with reporters.

Aside from the Mazda MX-30 and the recently launched CX-60, the Japanese automaker is also working to electrify its other vehicles in its global lineup.

For the North American market, Mazda is already aiming to launch a hybrid model of the CX-50, its Mazda 3-derived outdoor crossover. This adds another model to its growing list of electrified vehicles.

Things are also looking up in the North American market. The Inflation Reduction Act offers tax breaks for those who purchase EVs assembled in the country. Mazda aims to take advantage of the scheme by shifting electric vehicle production and battery sourcing to the region. The act could help fast-track Mazda’s sales and incentivize the public to buy more electric vehicles.

As details of the upcoming model are not yet available, it will be a waiting game to see what Mazda will have in store. However, given the rise in popularity of SUVs and crossovers, the new electric-only model could come in the form of a crossover or SUV.

Do you think Mazda is late to the EV game, or are they right on time?
