Chery Auto Philippines is dead set on expanding its lineup of electrified vehicles.
The Chinese carmaker announced in a September 2023 press statement that a sample batch of its electric vehicles (EV) is coming to the Philippines soon.
“Following Chery’s launch of its hybrid models in the country, Chery eyes to incorporate green power to its upcoming model offerings to provide its Filipino customers more energy-saving and sustainable vehicles,” the company said.
Chery Auto Philippines also said it plans to debut one new plug-in hybrid and two new battery EVs for the local market.
What could they be?
Although the press photo provided by the carmaker shows three cars under sheets, it’s fairly easy to glean what these are.
The rightmost vehicle is likely the Chery eQ1 city car, which has been in production since 2016 and is larger than the Jetour Ice Cream (also made by Chery). The eQ1 has an all-aluminum body, a 76 PS electric motor and a 40.3-kWh battery pack with a claimed maximum range of 281 km.
Meanwhile, the center vehicle could be the eQ7 crossover. This has a rear-mounted electric motor that offers up to claimed 512 km of range and a maximum of 252 PS and 285 Nm of torque.
Finally, the left-most silhouette could be a plug-in-hybrid electric (PHEV) version of the Chery Tiggo 7 crossover.
Chery Philippines’ electrified lineup
As of press time, Chery has three models in the Philippines with electrified powertrains.
The Tiggo 5x Pro Hybrid gets a turbocharged 1.5-liter, twin-cam, 16-valve inline-4 gasoline engine mated to a 48-volt, belt-starter generator.
The combined output is 154 PS and 230 Nm of torque, which are coursed through a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
Finally, the seven-seat Tiggo 8 Pro PHEV combines a turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-4 gasoline engine with an electric motor. The combined output is a whopping 324 PS and 545 Nm of torque that is coursed through a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission.
Chery Auto Philippines claims that the Tiggo 8 Pro PHEV can run up to 75 km in electric-only mode, with the 19.27-kWh battery pack taking around three hours to fully charge.
