So, why are we so excited about the soon-to-be-launched KYMCO KRV Moto 180? Well, because, unlike most scooters, this one is fitted with a chain drive.
Not only is this uncommon, but it is also indicative of the KRV’s sporty character.
What’s up with that, anyway? How come scooters run on belts while most sport bikes are chain-driven? Also, what’s the deal with shaft drives?

Well, the primary function of a final drive system is to transfer power from the engine to the rear wheel to propel the motorcycle forward. Yet, final drives on bikes vary depending on the purpose and overall design of a particular model.
Chain
Arguably the most popular final drive on motorcycles as it offers the most efficiency in transmitting power to the rear wheel with only a 1 to 4% transmission loss.
It is also the lightest, composed only of a chain and sprocket. The downside is that this requires regular cleaning and lubrication to prevent premature wear.
Belt
Usually found on scooters and cruisers, belts offer smoother performance and they have less operating noise too. Modern belts have steel wire reinforcement under the tough, rubber-like material and they require no lubrication.
On the contrary, belts operate on dry systems as they rely on friction to transmit power to the rear wheel. Belts are known to have 9 to 15% transmission loss potentially due to slippage.
Shaft
The heaviest and the most expensive of the three, shaft drives are used mostly on big adventure bikes and tourers. This type of final drive requires virtually no maintenance and would often last as long as the service life of the motorcycle.
However, power loss is at 20 to 25% as energy is sucked by all the heavy moving parts in a shaft drive system. This reminds me of the “ayuda” funds distribution during the lockdown.
Well, back to the KRV Moto 180. Does the thought of applying chain lube on your scooter leaves a silly grin on your face too?
