Sporty Wigo! 2023 Toyota Agya GR Sport gets exclusive suspension, steering for sharper handling

According to our colleagues from AutoFun Indonesia, the new model now rides on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture platform and inherits some of the sporty DNA of Toyota's GAZOO Racing (GR) motorsports division.

For its suspension, the small Toyota hatchback gets a new set of shock absorbers and snail springs for the top-spec GR Sport variant.

These modifications give it more damping power than the standard model, leading to a sportier drive.

The Toyota Agya GR Sport gets a tighter ratio for its electric power steering system to make it more agile when maneuvering.

This variant also wears sports tires chosen specifically for it -- Dunlop SP Sport Maxx 050 type with the size 185/55.

These provide greater traction on straight roads and maintain their grip on winding roads. Note that a different tire brand might be used if this variant were to enter the Philippine market.

"Special settings have been implemented to improve performance and handling, making the driving experience even more enjoyable and challenging," said Toyota Motor Corporation executive chief engineer Toshihiro Nakaho.

Nakaho said adding downforce to the Agya GR Sport allows it to maneuver in a stable and agile manner without worrying about losing control.

The tire grip is enhanced thanks to the diverted airflow and doesn't put pressure on the rear tires.

Sporty, but no Toyota Safety Sense

Unlike its Perodua Axia sibling, the new Toyota Agya does not come with the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) active-safety suite.

“At the Toyota Agya, there is no TSS feature yet. Because we look at the segment and want to present Agya at affordable prices for all variants," said PT Toyota Astra Motor vice president Henry Tanoto.

Removing this feature could also mean it will not be available in the Philippine market once the new model makes its debut. This will likely keep the pricing of the new Toyota Wigo competitive and affordable.

What do you think of the new setup of the 2023 Toyota Agya GR Sport?
