Mitsubishi will launch a hybrid version of the Mitsubishi Xpander, as mentioned during the 2024 Mitsubishi Triton launch.
The mention of the Xpander hybrid was seen earlier on during the launch program for the Triton as Mitsubishi President Takao Kato quickly glossed over the brand’s plans for upcoming vehicles in the ASEAN region.
He mentioned that aside from the Triton, Mitsubishi would launch a new compact SUV, which will likely be the Mitsubishi XForce, and that the automaker will also launch a Mitsubishi Xpander hybrid model for early 2024.
"In addition to this new Triton, we plan to launch a new compact SUV, as well as the Xpander hybrid model early next year. All these will continue to reveal Mitsubishi Motors' uniqueness going forward and accelerate our ASEAN businesses," said Kato.
The exact details of the hybrid model are still a mystery; however, reports have indicated that it might get the powerplant of the Mitsubishi Delica D:2, a 1.2-liter gasoline engine paired with a DC synchronous electric motor and a continuously variable transmission.
The new engine alone produces 91PS 118 Nm of torque, which on paper isn’t a lot, but it is paired with an electric motor that produces 3.1 PS and 5.1 Nm of torque.
The average fuel consumption for the hybrid system is around 22.4km/l in mixed driving conditions, which could be ideal for the already stellar fuel economy of the Mitsubishi Xpander.
However, take this information with a grain of salt, as Mitsubishi may still change the hybrid powerplant of the hybrid Xpander to produce more power.
Mitsubishi has yet to release a specific launch date for the Xpander hybrid, but our best guess is to put the launch sometime in Q1 of 2024, just in time for a minor update for the MPV.
It's a waiting game to see what Mitsubishi will have in store once the new electrified Xpander arrives.
