2022 Mitsubishi Mirage G4

Japanese automaker Mitsubishi promises a lot of improvements in the latest version of their entry-level sedan, the 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage G4. However, it decided to keep one of the key components of the Mirage intact, and for good reason. 

You see, one of the most vital factors to consider about any car is its powertrain. But for 2022, the Mirage is keeping its 1.2-liter 3-cylinder naturally-aspirated gasoline engine as it.  Like previous year models, the MIVEC engine still produces 78 ps and 100 Nm of torque and it is still mated to either a 5-speed manual or a CVT. Normally, one would consider that a red flag when it comes to choosing a brand new car. But hear us out, this engine is actually quite good.

The most notable feature of this engine and transmission combination in the 2022 Mirage is that it is enough to power the Mirage over a wide range of driving conditions. And it does so rather smoothly. Plus, the CVT also does a good job of keeping engine revs at a low level to maximize fuel efficiency. And that is where the Mirage actually excels.

In a fuel economy run supervised by the Automobile Association Philippines, the 2022 Mirage G4 CVT logged in a 22.83 km/l  performance. This was done over a 236.227-kilometer loop along SCTEX and TPLEX, with three people onboard, traveling at a steady 80 km/h while observing traffic signs, tire pressures set to 32 psi, and with air conditioning set at a low blower speed and temperature. For a city car, this works out well for the G4 which can hold its own in traffic. 

Compared to its rivals, the Mirage has excellent damping, is quite comfortable even for its size, and will make you feel you are driving a more expensive vehicle because of the way it handles. Although, there is a bit of a learning curve when it comes to learning how the acceleration and gear-changing feel. Like in other CVTs, it is best to give the acceleration some time to react by smoothly squeezing the accelerator instead of mashing it. This should let the CVT find the ideal ratio to match the engine's speed and maximize fuel efficiency at any given time. Other than that, the Mirage G4 offers a drive, handling and performance, you can expect for its price.
