The Toyota Land Cruiser J70 series has been on the market for 39 years and has steadily received upgrades to keep it up-to-date and modern.
While it officially exited other markets in 1990 when the new Land Cruiser J80 came along, other places such as Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand have kept the SUV alive and on sale.
The last update to the J70 series Land Cruiser was in 2007 when it received the 1VD-FTV, a 4.5-liter turbodiesel V8 engine. The new engine gave the SUV 205 horsepower and 430 Nm of torque.
Despite the saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," Toyota has seen it fit to give the platform a new engine - the 2.8-liter 4-cylinder turbodiesel from the Toyota Hilux.
The new 2.8-liter motor was a move by Toyota to lower the fuel consumption and emissions of the J70 series Land Cruiser.
While the official power figures of the 2.8-liter have yet to be released, it may be close to what is currently available in the Philippines, which produces 204 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque.
However, reports have stated that the numbers could go as high as 221 horsepower and 550 Nm of torque.
The 4.5-liter V8 turbodiesel engine produces 202 horsepower and 430 Nm of torque. This would mean the J70 series Land Cruiser could see a substantial power bump from the Hilux engine if the 221 horsepower and 550 Nm of torque power figures are correct.
Modern touches
Aside from the new motor, the Toyota Land Cruiser J70 series will receive other updates.
These updates include a new 3-spoke steering wheel, automatic transmission, and an infotainment system with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
What do you think about Toyota’s move to give the J70 series a more modern 4-cylinder engine?
