Toyota Philippines recently updated the pricing of the Toyota Hilux and the Toyota Corolla Cross.
While the Corolla Cross had an overall spec change for the model, the Hilux got a Local Data Communication Module (LDCM) for all of its variants except the J, Cab, and chassis models.
The addition of this new feature to the popular Toyota pickup truck got us thinking, what does it do, and how is it beneficial to the vehicle?
We got an official statement from Toyota Philippines, and this is what we have found.

What does the LDCM do?
The LDCM is a device installed in a vehicle that sends information from the car to the customer through the myToyota Connect (MTC). It is the newest suite of connected services offered by the brand through the myTOYOTA App that allows the user to check various types of vehicle data using their smartphones.
With this app, customers can experience enhanced mobility as the connected vehicle is equipped with a suite of technology focused on safety, security, and convenience for a better driving experience.
How is the data from the LDCM used, and where is it stored?
Customers can access information about their vehicle through MTC, including location, trip history, engine status, and driving behavior.
The information from the device is stored in Toyota’s customer data system, which MTC uses for various features such as maintenance reminders, finding my car, and paying how you drive insurance.
Below is the list of features and their descriptions:
Vehicle Status |
Provide the last location, odometer, fuel level, and engine status |
My Trips |
Get summaries for all trips done in a day |
Find my Car |
Check the last known vehicle location |
Locate Vehicle |
Get the location of your vehicle even when your engine is turned off |
Geofencing |
Set virtual boundaries to alert you when the vehicle is entering or leaving the zone |
Maintenance Reminder |
Get timely notifications based on actual mileage |
Insurance (Pay How You Drive) |
Insurance premiums based on driving behavior |
How safe is the data that the LDCM collects?
With data privacy a vital concern nowadays, you would think that Toyota has this issue covered. And it does.
The device will only collect, store, and transmit Toyota-specific data that will be used to provide myTOYOTA Connect services. This data will only be collected upon the customer's consent by accepting the terms and conditions.
If customers do not accept these Terms and Conditions, no data will be collected from the vehicle, and myTOYOTA Connect services will not be available.
Is it worth the price increase?
If you want to fully utilize what Toyota offers you in terms of ease of ownership thanks to the myTOYOTA app, then using the price increase is worth it.
The LCDM will make your ownership of a Toyota Hilux much easier as you can now track different aspects of your vehicle that were not possible before. Now you will know where it is, what it needs, and what you can do to address these needs.
Should other brands adopt more connected features like this?
